A defining force of the global art scene

As someone from Basel, it can be tempting to praise one’s own city. Yet each year, when Art Basel opens, local conviction becomes global reality. For a few days, Basel turns into the centre of the international art world, welcoming collectors, artists, and curators from every continent and reaffirming its reputation as the city of museums.

Founded in 1970 by gallerists Trudl Bruckner, Ernst Beyeler, and Balz Hilt, Art Basel was conceived as a quality-driven platform for modern and contemporary art. From 16,000 visitors at its premiere, it quickly grew into a key node of the global art market, where reputation and cultural authority are shaped alongside sales.

Basel remains the heart of the brand. Each June, over 250 carefully selected galleries present works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Around the main fair, satellite events such as Liste, Volta, and Photo Basel create a dense urban art ecosystem. At the same time, brands like Ruinart, Rolex, Audemars Piguet, and BMW use the fair to position themselves at the intersection of art, cultural relevance, and luxury.

Global in Vision

Over the decades, Art Basel expanded beyond Switzerland into a global network with editions on several continents.

A key milestone came in 2002 with Art Basel Miami Beach. It opened the US market and, for the first time, merged contemporary art with lifestyle and luxury on a large scale. Miami became the highlight of the annual Art Week, where art, design, and fashion intersect with artists such as Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Pablo Picasso, and Beeple reflecting the fair’s broad range.

Then, in 2013, Art Basel Hong Kong made the move into Asia, quickly becoming a central platform for the Asia-Pacific scene and attracting a new generation of internationally minded collectors. It positioned itself as a bridge between Western markets and Asia’s dynamic cultural landscape.

Since 2022, Paris has strengthened the European portfolio, anchoring the fair in one of the world’s great cultural capitals.

And with Art Basel Qatar, launched in early 2026 in Doha, the Middle East became part of this global constellation, highlighting the growing importance of new geographic and cultural axes in the art market.
