Mastering the Perfect Cut

There are mornings in Zurich when the lake feels like a mirror held up to the sky, silver grey and perfectly still. The kind of morning that urges you to slow down and look around, to enjoy. And on the second floor of one of the city’s most quietly spectacular hotels, the guests of La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich will find a new reason to do exactly that.

“Hair is a malleable material, a living thing. If we learn to observe, understand, and interpret it, it follows us obligingly – without becoming unruly”

Rossano Ferretti

The Rossano Ferretti HairSpa has newly arrived in Zurich, bringing with it a philosophy of creation, rather than a service menu. Rossano Ferretti, the Italian maestro, grew up in a village of just 500 inhabitants, surrounded by cows and the rhythms of rural life. Beauty, however, was always close at hand: his mother was a hairdresser, his father a barber, and his first experience of the craft was shampooing clients in his parents’ salon.

At 15, Ferretti set off for London – an early sign of the visionary spirit that would later define his career. Over the years, he built not just salons, but Hair Spas: refined spaces devoted to a more personal, intuitive and elevated approach to hair. Today, known as both a head master and a hair master, he has spent three generations refining his craft and has created a global network of Hair Spas in the world’s most distinguished hotels. La Réserve Eden au Lac is his Swiss-German chapter, and it fits the address perfectly.

At the heart of the experience is the Ferretti Metodo Cut – a technique that resists the logic of scissors and geometry in favour of something more intuitive. Hair, in Ferretti’s world, is a living material. It has its own movement, its own character, and a cut that doesn’t understand this is merely a mathematical exercise. The approach reads the hair first, then follows it and the result is a softness that looks effortless precisely because it is not forced.

Complementing the signature cut are personalised hair and scalp rituals, each formulated with up to 99% naturally derived ingredients, developed and produced in Italy. They are designed not for a single session but for lasting balance – restoring, hydrating, and leaving hair in a condition that improves over time.

The setting is as thoughtful as the treatment. Philippe Starck’s imaginary yacht club – all brick walls, navigation charts and lake-facing windows – lends the HairSpa a particular kind of calm. Not the hushed silence of a medical clinic, but the easy stillness of somewhere that takes beauty seriously without taking itself too seriously.

For those who already know the Rossano Ferretti Hair Salon at La Réserve Geneva, the Zurich address will feel like a natural continuation. Same discretion, same craft, new city.

I have had a new tax advisor since last year. His name is Sepp, and he was a serendipitous find. Meeting him electrified me. Not because he charges about a tenth of what I used to pay for having my tax return completed, but because he is someone who has found his calling: he loves what he does. And it is exactly what gets him out of bed in the morning.
