Two Women Changing Jewellery Forever
When you think of Bucherer, you think of watches, Swiss precision, and exceptional service. What you might not expect is what lies behind all of that: a living atelier in the heart of Lucerne, where goldsmiths, stone setters and gemmologists have spent their days in quiet, devoted pursuit of some of the finest gemstones on earth – every single day since 1888.

There’s a particular kind of morning that Lucerne does better than anywhere else – when the lake is perfectly still, the mountains look like they have been painted into the sky, and the air carries that Alpine crispness that makes you feel like you have your life completely together. I woke up to this exactly at the Mandarin Oriental: silk curtains, a view over Lake Lucerne that made checking emails feel like a moral failing, and a bathtub large enough to resolve international disputes. In addition, something worthy of this morning was waiting for me just across the lake.
Bucherer has stood on Lucerne’s Schwanenplatz since 1888, the same decade Van Gogh was painting sunflowers, and whilst the world has reinvented itself countless times since then, Bucherer has only become more rarefied. What began as a watch and jewellery retailer evolved into a house with its own ateliers, its own creative vision, and its own intensely devoted relationship with the finest stones on earth.
The story begins with two women – Louise and Wilhelmina Bucherer – independent, visionary, and ahead of their time by roughly a century. They travelled the world in search of the finest gemstones, establishing foundations of expertise that still carry through in everything the house does today.

Watercolour renderings and gemstone swatches laid out during the commission process in the Bucherer design studio, each bespoke piece begins here, weeks before a single metal is touched.
side by side across nearly 800 square metres flooded with light. The atmosphere is one of focused calm – the kind of stillness that isn’t the absence of noise but a reflection of concentration.
A goldsmith who has spent 30 years at the same bench develops a relationship with platinum that borders on something personal, whilst a stone setter who has placed thousands of diamonds by hand knows immediately whether the light is falling correctly. This is expertise that accrues slowly, invisibly, like the formation of the very gemstones they work with.
At the centre sits a private suite, placed deliberately among the workshops, and this is where Bucherer becomes intimate. For particular clients, it is possible to commission something that does not yet exist – something that will carry the specificity of you, translated by people who understand that the finest jewellery is never really about the stone but about what the stone is asked to hold.
